At the instigation of the North Carolina Museums Council, May 18-24, 2008 has been declared Museums Week in North Carolina by Governor Mike Easley. For the text of the Governor's proclamation, just click here for a PDF.
This is a perfect opportunity for every museum in North Carolina to promote the impact we have on our respective communities. Consider distributing a press release and writing to your government representatives extolling the virtues of your museum. Then encourage your members and volunteers to write similar letters describing how much your museum means to them. To assist you in this endeavor, the letter below by NCMC President Troy Burton offers talking points -- please feel free to use them in your own communications.

Dear North Carolina Community:
As announced in the enclosed proclamation by Governor Michael F. Easley, Museum Week in North Carolina is being observed May 18-24, 2008 and culminates with International Museum Day observed on May 24. In recognition of the valuable role museums play in our state’s economy and culture, the North Carolina Museums Council (NCMC) is pleased to provide you with information about our state’s museums, including those located in the districts you represent.
North Carolina has consistently been named one of the Top 10 states for cultural and heritage tourism, according to the Travel Industry of America and Smithsonian magazine, and cultural tourism is the fastest-growing segment of the tourism industry in the United States. Museums are an essential element in this equation and therefore play a critical role in our state’s cultural and economic livelihood.
The NCMC is a non-profit organization of museums and professionals that has for more than forty-five years promoted the advancement of North Carolina museums and professional practices. In addition to representing museums that focus on the arts, history, science and children’s programs, the NCMC also serves visual art centers, zoos, aquariums, historic houses, planetariums, educational forests and science centers.
All of our organizations provide destinations for visitor and tourists, educational opportunities for our citizens and, most importantly, an identity to this culturally rich state of ours.
Thank you for your time and consideration, and please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments regarding Museum Week or our North Carolina Museums.
Sincerely,
Troy Burton
