The NCMC Art Section is hosting their annual Art Section Breakfast on Friday, March 6th which is open to anyone registered for the annual NCMC conference (being held in conjunction with SCFM in Rock Hill, SC – click here for Conference information), especially art staff and volunteers from throughout the Carolinas. Attendees are encouraged to attend and share ideas, information and materials with others during the breakfast, which begins at 8:30 a.m.
At 9:15, NCMC Art Section Chair Lisë Swensson will officially open the session by introducing the featured speaker. Phil Kline, Executive Director of The Mint Museum has been invited to talk about the major expansion project his museum will complete in 2010. This innovative, state-of-the-art facility in Charlotte’s burgeoning Center City will provide larger and more flexible changing exhibition space, unique galleries to showcase the collections, and a Family Gallery to reinforce the Museum’s dual priorities of art and education.
Housed in what was the first branch of the United States Mint, the Mint Museum of Art opened in 1936. With works as diverse as the 18th century coronation portraits of Britain’s King George III and Queen Charlotte and the distinctive 20th century collages of Charlotte-born artist Romare Bearden, its holdings reflect the importance of both past and present artistic traditions.
The Mint Museum of Craft + Design opened in 1999 in the center of uptown Charlotte’s growing cultural district. Heralded as one of the foremost craft and design museums in the nation, the Museum houses permanent collections of ceramics, glass, fiber, wood, metal and mixed media, reflecting the creative evolution of studio craft from the utilitarian objects of the 19th century to the art of today.
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about The Mint Museum – one institution with two dynamic facilities: the Mint Museum of Art and the Mint Museum of Craft + Design -- through the eyes of the CEO of the oldest art museum in North Carolina.
