Regular work schedule is Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and Saturday from 10:30 am – 5:00 pm, with opportunities for flexibility. Evening, holiday, and weekend hours are required as needed for programming.
Compensation: Annual salary starts at $35,000 with an additional annual benefits stipend.

The Charlotte Museum of History (CMH) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that interprets and preserves Charlotte’s unique history, enriching the community through shared understanding of the past and inspiring dialogue about the future. The CMH Education Department engages our community in the history of our region through exhibits, programs, dialogue, stories, and preservation.
The Education Specialist represents the Museum in a public-facing position with a focus on visitor experience, and acts as a first point-of-contact for partner organizations and the general public. This role will have a specific focus on K-12 and family audiences, serving as team lead and first point-of-contact on all K-12 programming including in-person and virtual field trips, and all events geared toward family audiences.
- Manages the development, administration, logistics, and evaluations of all Museum programming for K-12 and family audiences. Designs, presents, and evaluates an annual calendar of educational programs for students and the general public to achieve CMH’s Objectives for Program Outcomes.
- Delivers a diverse slate of in-person, virtual, and hybrid programming including guided tours, lectures, school programs, special events, and outreach. These programs take place inside the Museum, on our grounds, at the 1774 Alexander Homesite, at the historic Siloam School, at public venues, in schools, and at other partner organizations.
- Takes an active role in maintaining and presenting the museum’s collections, exhibits, historic buildings, and activity spaces.
- Builds educational and cultural partnerships with regional museums, community partners, civic organizations, and government agencies.
- Provides accurate, engaging, and well-organized tours of CMH exhibits and historic resources for the visiting public, tour groups, and school groups.
- Collaborates with Development and Education staff on fundraising initiatives, works to improve membership engagement and sustainability of public programs. Maintains CMH audience and other education data for use in program evaluation, partnership development, development efforts, and budget preparations.
- Incorporates new educational approaches and tools in program development; stays up-to-date on museum best practices through professional development and conference attendance. Conducts and directs research to update programs as new and relevant information becomes available.
- Ensures the safety and security of all visitors while on CMH property at all times; responds calmly and professionally to emergencies. Ensures the safety and security of CMH site and buildings, exhibits, and collections by following CMH policies and procedures and museum industry best practices.
Volunteer & Intern Management
- Manages the student internship and volunteer programs.
- Develops an annual roster of student intern and volunteer positions to support the calendar of educational programs and exhibits. Works with partner institutions of higher learning to provide hands-on learning opportunities for students in related fields.
- Recruits, trains, oversees, and evaluates CMH student interns and docents.
- Creates regular communications to schedule volunteers, share news, solicit their views, and celebrate successes of the volunteer program.
- With the Development Director, plans and executes volunteer appreciation events / activities.
- Engages with CMH audiences via digital marketing tools, assists with the management of social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). Stays current on best practices and builds the organization’s effectiveness at audience engagement through these tools.
- Works with team members to publicize CMH events through e-newsletter and explores new opportunities to improve audience awareness of CMH events. Learns from other cultural organizations’ successes in inspiring audience enthusiasm for cultural programs.
- Works closely with Education and Facilities staff to assist with non-K12 programming, including but not limited to private rentals, special events, and adult programming, often held on evenings and weekends.
- Demonstrates enthusiasm for the position and passion for the mission of the Museum; acts as highly motivated team player who is proactive and anticipates needs.
- Maintains a positive attitude and outstanding work ethic, interacts cooperatively and respectfully with others internally and externally.
- Assists with other duties as needed to maintain successful operations and programs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Public History, History, Museum Studies, Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university required, Master’s degree preferred.
- Three years or more successful experience in a similar position, preferably with a cultural institution.
- Exceptional written and verbal communications skills. Spanish fluency a plus.
- Experience developing and delivering programs related to North Carolina history and multicultural themes; experience conducting research and evaluation. Digital content creation a plus.
- Highly organized with the ability to lead projects from concept to delivery to reporting; ability to multitask and maintain exceptional attention to detail at all times; ability to prioritize tasks and commitment to following through.
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills; demonstrated success at working collaboratively and independently.
- Strong commitment to excellence and superior customer service; calm and professional demeanor under pressure.
This position operates in a professional work environment and routinely involves the use of computers, printers, telephones, and filing cabinets. Many programs and activities led by this position take place outdoors and in historic buildings across the Museum’s 8-acre campus, as well as at offsite locations.
While performing the duties of this job, the Education Specialist is regularly required to talk and hear; frequently is required to stand, to walk, and to use arms and hands to carry. This position requires the ability to regularly lift chairs and folding tables (up to 40 pounds), and the physical ability to navigate through historic buildings with multiple flights of stairs and tight spaces.
