The North Carolina Museum of History Division (NCMOH) promotes the understanding of the history and material culture of North Carolina for the educational benefit of North Carolinians. Through collections, exhibits, and educational programs, its museums encourage citizens and visitors to explore and understand the past; to reflect on their lives and their place in history; and to preserve state, regional, and local history for future generations.
Description of Work:
This position serves as overall manager of the Museum's program of exhibitions from conception and development through completion. To that end, the position coordinates the activities of the Museum's departments as they relate to exhibition projects including budget development and oversight. This position includes managing the daily activities of the Exhibition Design and Construction Section, currently comprised of nine positions located at the NCMOH. Works closely with the Exhibition Designers to ensure that all design projects maintain the high standards and aesthetics of the Museum. Position coordinates exhibits at all the Division of State History Museum locations, emphasizing the sharing of exhibits developed within the Division among the Divisions museums, as well as with other entities within the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Primary responsibilities include planning, budgeting, scheduling, and coordinating all non-curatorial aspects of exhibitions. Position prepares long-range exhibition plans with appropriate key personnel, including the Director, Deputy Director, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Curator. Position serves as Chair of the Exhibit Review Committee (ERC) which selects the exhibitions to be displayed. As part of that job, the position researches exhibition proposals from outside institutions, forwarding them to the ERC and composing accept/decline letters accordingly; tracking and monitoring proposals for future consideration. Position oversees traveling exhibitions produced by the Museum that travel to other institutions, including negotiating and reviewing contracts, managing traveling exhibit schedules, overseeing exhibit shipping and coordinating artifact loans with the Collections section and coordinating the installation of those exhibits at other institutions. Position coordinates the marketing of NCMOH exhibits to other institutions. The person in this position must have effective communication skills, both written and oral and must have strong interpersonal skills, along with clear and strong organizational skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSAs listed below:
1. Demonstrated experience in museum exhibit planning and building, or experience in planning and building theatre or movie sets.
2. Demonstrated experience managing museum exhibits or theatre/film set design and construction technicians and staff.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of new trends in exhibit design, exhibit building techniques and interactive technology or similar knowledge in theatre or movie set trends in design and construction.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software programs.
5. Must be able to work nights and weekends when needed, as well as occasional day and overnight travel.
6. Must have a valid NC Driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
Experience using Design software for designing exhibits or theatre or film sets.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's degree in History, Business Administration, Public Administration, Marketing, Management, Education, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressively responsible experience in planning, directing, and managing all aspects of a business, governmental program, a museum, or a public historical program or institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Master's degree with a concentration in either design, museum studies, theatre or film production and four years of experience in museum exhibit production, theatre or film production or equivalent setting.
